Independent Press Gallery Condemns Parliamentary Press Gallery for Censorship of Independent Journalists at Mark Carney’s Swearing-In

The Independent Press Gallery (IPG) condemns the Canadian Parliamentary Press Gallery (PPG) for blocking independent journalists from covering Mark Carney’s swearing-in at Rideau Hall.

Rebel News’ accreditation was rejected under hypocritical and politically charged justifications, punishing the outlet for being transparent about its biases rather than pretending to be ‘objective’ like many mainstream media outlets. Meanwhile, PPG-accredited outlets routinely take left-wing partisan positions on a range of issues, including the war in Israel, climate change, free speech, oil and gas, parents’ rights, the Freedom Convoy, and gender issues.

In its last-minute rejection email to Rebel News journalist Alexa Lavoie, the PPG confirmed Rebel News does report on parliamentary issues, but stated:

“The Executive is of the opinion that Rebel News and its employees are often active participants in those stories, rather than observers, reporters, and interpreters. Examples include petitions and fundraising initiatives tied to news stories covered by Rebel News.”

The IPG calls on the PPG to allow fair access for all journalists, including those challenging government narratives. Canadians deserve a press that holds power accountable, not one that shields it through a protectionist monopoly on access.
